Genre Research: Romance

Our opening scene will be a romance because will really wanted to make a gothic romance that was inspired by vampires and Morticia and Gomez Addams.

Common camera Shots, Angles, and Movements

  • Two shot
  • Medium shot
  • Over the shoulder shot
  • Establishing shot
  • Long shot
  • Close up
  • High angle
  • Tracking shot movement

Common costumes

Typically the female character in a romance will wear feminine, frilly, pastels, and youthful clothes where the male will wear either all formal suits or extremely laid-back wear such as baggy clothes, flannel, and casual jeans/shorts.

Common lighting

Romantic movies use warm lighting to associate the audiences brain with romance, intimacy, and warmth rather than cold and closed off. More artistic romance movies will use colorful lighting to represent different emotions such as love, happiness, and jealousy.

Common acting

People in romance act either act like a very clumsy, love struck, and childish character or a very stoic, closed off, and “doesn’t believe in love character.

Common makeup

Females in romance movies typically where very light and feminine makeup however some can also be very dark and grungy to portray the “doesn’t believe in love” character.

Common props

Phones, flowers, rings, letters and instruments are common in romance movies.

Common settings

Big cities, especially New York City and Paris are popular places romance’s take place to due to its icon status its multitude of opportunities to find love. Other common places are small towns, high schools, and tropical places

Common editing

Straight cuts keep the movie running smoothly. Closeups and two shots are edited to better show the characters emotions and connection to one another. Gentle, warm, and romantic lighting and filters are quintessential in romance movie editing.

Common sound

Diegetic sounds that are common are background talking, footsteps, background music, and rain. Non-diegetic sounds added are commonly either upbeat, happy songs or heartfelt, slow strings to show emotion. Voice overs are also used a lot in romance movies.

Examples

Five Feet Apart (2019)

Licorice Pizza (2021)

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

Positive elements

I like the period drama part or romance due to the costumes and they tend to be good because they’re British and no one does period romances better than the British. I also like gothic romance part of the genre because of how messed up and morbid it can get.

Negative elements

90% of the story lines are the same cliché repeatedly. Girl is ditsy and dumb, and boy has to convince her to go on a date with him. Every hallmark romance movie I’ve ever seen has put the feminist movement back 10 years.
