Genre Research: Crimson Peak
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
This movie has the textbook gothic romance feel that we want to base our final task on. The opening sequence of this movie shows the credits and title cards with gothic décor, settings, and objects that hold significance to the rest of the movie. The font is formal yet interesting which is what we want ours to have the feel to. You know based off the beginning that it is going to be a dark storyline and we want ours to portray it as being a romance with those dark undertones.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
I liked the contrast, visually, of the two romantic characters. The male partner wears all formal, black clothes and has black hair, while the female partner wears all colorful, feminine clothes and has blonde hair. The movie also had a really good dance scene that incorporated a lot of over the shoulder shots and close ups. Also, in the end you see how true their love for one another is and how the male lead doesn’t hold the female lead back from overcome the conflict herself (we love last minute feminism story lines).
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
I didn’t like how fast the two characters fell in “love”. They danced once and all of a sudden she wanted to get married. The female character is incredibly naïve and I wish she could’ve seen through the manipulation faster. It is typical for this genre to have a naïve fall in love with a male who is manipulating her and I didn’t like that the movie started out like that, however, see how it was necessary. Also, the intimate scene did not appeal to me.
