Makeup, Props, and Sets
Makeup was a major part of Videos look. We took inspiration from the original music video which has a futuristic looking character dressed in a silver body suit with pink and blue wig and shoulder pads. Naturally, we stayed true to the colors and incorporated them in the design. The eye makeup had blue on the inner corner, pink in the outer corner, and silver jewels on the sides and bottom of the eyes as well as the chin. The placement of the jewels lined up on the side of the eye/face and below gave a mysterious and eccentric vibe to the character. For hair, we went for a messy style to match the messiness of Videos wig in the original music video. For Radio Star we decided to do a conservative and neat hairstyle to match with that time period. There was also no makeup applied to Radio Star besides lip balm.
A prop we used were microphones for the pan scene. Since it took place in a recording studio/sound booth, the microphone props were necessary for showing the setting and action taking place. We made this setting by draping a dark blanket over the glass shower walls. Another prop we used was a kitchen knife for the tilt murder scene. This was needed to show the act of Video murdering Radio Star, which was also further developed by the fake blood on the knife. We decided that the scene should take place in a area that looks abandoned and forest-like. So, we filmed behind some buildings with trees and shrubs. Another prop we used was the yellow comforter in Radio Stars waking up scene. This prop looked more vintage and old, hence appropriate for the 50s time period. It was also set in Elena’s bedroom because it had less bright colors and books were placed next to the bed. We also used Mary’s vinyl player as a prop to show the recording technician character putting on the music for Radio Stars instrumental track. A piece of paper was used as a prop, during the tracking shot, as the letter from Video to Radio Star allowing for them to meet up.
