Genre Research: Notting Hill
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie
have?
An element of the genre that the movie included was the boy saving girl trope. In the movie the female character goes to the male characters house as refuge when faced with paparazzi. We intend to also include a character saving other character storyline within the opening scene to create more of a romantic feel. The movie also had funny scenes, which many romances do, that we intend to include in our final task with the addition of a comic relief character like Spike. We will also include the acting of one character being completely infatuated with the other as this movie had.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
The movie had a good romance story unlike most cliches. The male character wasn’t too pushy, cocky, or begging the girl to go out with her. The female character wasn’t naïve and had flaws unlike a lot of romance movies that like to make them perfect. They were also separated a lot which created a hopeless, yearning mood to the film. This made it even better for the audience when they ended up together because it felt like they defied all odds. It also had a lot of funny moments which I particularly liked due to British humor being elite.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
An element of the genre that I didn’t like was the female lead being objectified. There are several comments throughout the movie referring to her beauty and physical attributes, several in an inappropriate manner. I understand how men objectifying her is a major point of the plot, but I felt that a couple of jokes could have been omitted. Overall, seeing the sexual harassment that women have to go through on the daily did not appeal to me as an AFAB person.
